THOMAS F. WELCH
VETERANS of FOREIGN WARS
POST 706

COMMANDER’S CORNER
Congratulations to those who were elected to lead our Post for 2010-2011. It will indeed be a challenge, and a rewarding experience. Installation of the officers will be conducted at our meeting 19 May.
May is a month filled by events specifically designed to honor our veterans. 15 May is Armed Forces Day. We are sponsoring an Open House beginning at 1000; followed by a Flag Retirement Ceremony at 1100. We will have several Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard troops, plus displays from them and our own members. We invited all of the area Junior ROTC Cadets, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to participate, so it would be especially encouraging for all with your participation. Also, we are going to be at the Wal-Mart Store on Blue Angle Pkwy with our Buddy Poppies from 1000 until 1400. We need a few volunteers to assist with this endeavor. Remember Buddy Poppy revenue is used to aide veterans in need. So we need help to man the tables.
On 30 May we are going to be at the Wall South supporting the Riders. We will be serving food and thirst quenchers plus have our Buddy Poppies displayed. Need I say more? We could use your support on this endeavor too.
On 31 May, we have the Memorial Day Service at the NAS Pensacola Chapel at 0900. This service is open to the public and is not restricted to just our active military and veterans.
I would like to introduce our newest members voted into our Post in March: Ronald Adams, Edward Condon, Michael Hancock, Adam Hartley, Norman Holland, Michael Houston, Patrick McCann, Michael Moran, and Johnny Murphy. A big VFW welcome to our newest comrades.
We adjusted the hours of the Canteen on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We will not open until 1400 (2:00 PM) as it was not profitable to open at 1100.
Please bear with us during this period of adjustment.
Our District 1 meeting at Fort Walton Beach Post 7674 was changed to 8 May at 1000 due to a scheduling conflict at FWB.
Mailing your dues to National can lead to delays in getting them posted. You can now go online to www.vfw.org and pay your dues. We had a good turnout at the Milton Picnic. Food was great! Camaraderie was better. You shoulda been there and done that. Got our fill and then some.

Hello Sisters, I would like to take this opportunity again to say thank you for coming and supporting our last month’s dinner. However, I also want to apologize for us running out of food so early. We will do our best on the next dinner that this will not happen again.
I want to thank Beth, Sherri, and Pat for your help in the kitchen; if I left out anyone I'm sorry. I also want to give a big thanks to Shawn for all his hard work. He always has done a great job with all our events.
Let me also take this time to say thank you (I think) for voting me in for another term. I will try for this to be a better year for all of us and it will be with all your help and support. I can't do it without YOU.... I also want to thank Beth for accepting to be my Secretary, Millie for keeping her position as my treasurer, and for all the other ladies that were voted in for the upcoming new year effective in June.
We need more of you ladies to start attending the meetings and getting involved. Anyone can carry a card. We have several things coming up this month that need your attention.
Our next dinner will be "POT LUCK" so bring in your best recipe and sign your name on the list. See all of you our next meeting and again thank you.
Our Draw Down is scheduled for July. So please don’t miss out on this and the prizes of course. Tickets go on sale this week.
Thank you, ladies, for all you do, and have done, to keep the Ladies Auxiliary moving in the right direction. "Keep Smiling"

We would like to thank those who supported our last dinner. It didn't go to well, but we're hoping that it is just because of the weather. We are thinking about changing a few things, so if ya'll are enjoying the ribs and chicken, and ya'll want us to keep doing them, then please voice your opinion to a member of the Men's Auxiliary. Possible changes could be hamburger steaks or beef tips and rice, and any suggestions in this matter will also be welcomed.
Men's Auxiliary meeting will be held on Thursday, 13 May, at 6:00 PM and our next dinner will be on the 22 May at 6:00 PM.
We are planning a yard sale and car wash and a benefit for the Memorial Day Celebration at the WALL SOUTH on 30 May!!! Please come out and help support our veterans.
Thanks again and God Bless!!!

POST CANTEEN CORNER
Canteen Friends and Family, I would like to say thank you to the ones of you that have been very good about coming and supporting your canteen. For the rest of you shame on you.. You have been missing out on some good food and great entertainment. We need you to support your post. I/We are not saying you have to come in everyday or for every dinner, but it would be nice to show your faces on at least one of the dinner nights. Due to the fact we have had such a bad turn out on Saturdays I am not planning any entertainment for the month of June. We will only have the dinners. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have your support. If you believe in your VFW and you want to be an active card holder; then be one. We have to work together to keep this Post alive.
We will be going to new hours on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On those days we will open at 2 PM – until? The rest of the days will remain the same until further notice.
We still have KARAOKE on Thursdays with happy hour all day. So come out and do some singing, dancing and join your friends.
Remember "all for one and one for all"

AMERICANISM

MEMBERS WANTED!
Don’t forget about our Flag Retirement Ceremony on 15 May at 1100. We have commitments from several military organizations who will participate in this event and our Armed Forces Day Open House the same day.
Which World War I, WW II Flying Ace/Medal of Honor winner along with six others, survived a 21 day ordeal adrift in the Pacific after ditching their B-17 Flying Fortress? Who else, but Eddie Rickenbacker!
Check your garage or shed and see what spare building materials you have lying around. We could use some 2X4s, plywood, lighting fixtures, or general electrical supplies. This type of donation is a win/win situation for you and the Post. You will get a donation receipt for a tax write-off and you will help the Post defer the costs of buying these materials we could put to use. Please coordinate your donations with a Trustee or Post Officer as we do not have a great deal of storage space. We can pick it up if you can’t deliver your donated items.

Americanism Chairman

SUPPORT YOUR POST
Have you ever given any thought to why you joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars? I’m sure it was to be able to share war stories and help other veterans who were not as fortunate as you were. After all, we survived to live another day. Now it is our turn to take care of our Comrades who were not as fortunate as us. In order to complete our pledge to the VFW, you have to participate and show your support to those less fortunate. It always gives me a feeling of worth when someone we helped calls or writes to say “Thank you for all you do.” I understand why many of you are not able to help physically. I don’t understand why those who are physically capable don’t darken our doors or come by to ask: “What can I do to help?” We have 738 members; 600 or so never come by the “V”. Call your friends. Come by the Post. If you have any ideas, suggestions, or issues you want to affect, don’t be afraid to speak up and take a stand. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! WE NEED YOUR IDEAS! But most of all WE NEED YOU!!!
LOST MEMBERS
The Life Member Comrades listed here are “lost.” We have no address for them. If you know any of these individuals or there whereabouts, please call the Post and leave a message with their current address and phone number or send an email to vfwpost706@gmail.com.
