THOMAS F. WELCH
VETERANS of FOREIGN WARS
POST 706

COMMANDER’S CORNER
We are off to a good start this summer. We have our Memorial Day events on Sunday at The Wall and the Memorial Service at the NAS Chapel on Monday morning at 0900 followed by an open house at the Post.
We reached our goal of 100% membership, but still have over 100 members who have not renewed their membership from last year. We have a list of unpaid members at the Post, so if you know any of these members, how about giving them a call and encouraging them to renew their membership and come to the Post to make a difference.
The State Convention will be held at the Wyndham Convention Center in Orlando from 18 to 20 June. Check the State website at www.myfloridavfw.org for details.

I would like to introduce our newest members voted into our Post in May: Casey Cyrus, William Leonhardt, Paul Parks, James Trinkle, Robert White, Jr., William Whiteley, Sr., and Donald J. Yeiter. Congratulations to our news VFW comrades.
Your Post needs Y-O-U! As a member of our Post, we all have reasons for joining this elite and unique group. If you joined just to get your name on the list, perhaps you should re-evaluate your goals and objectives. Membership is always a challenge, and there are many areas that need your support. Even if you can only give an hour or so a month, your help would benefit your Post and fellow comrades. Don’t think “I don’t have to help because somebody else will step up to the plate.” If everyone believes someone else will step up, guess what? If you truly believe “the other guy” will get it done, we will not be successful. Remember the words in the song….some gave some, some gave all. How about occasionally giving “some.”
Mailing your dues to National can lead to delays in getting them posted. You can now go online to www.vfw.org and pay your dues. On the main screen, click on Membership; then click on Current Members; then click on Secure Log In; fill in the required blanks and you can pay your annual dues electronically.
Visit the Post website for updated information and activity calendars of the new VFW fiscal year, 2010. Log on to www.vfw706.org.

SENIOR VICE’S CORNER
The Post will honor our Law Enforcement officers of the Year at the March meeting. We also anticipate honoring the Teachers’ of the Year, other community service Officers of the Year and a couple of others if we are able to get their names in time from their organizations. The more members attending, the better our meeting shall be for the Post. “Be there or be square!”
Please pass this information to all veterans that you may know that were and are affected by the recent war time “STOP LOSS” orders to remain on active duty after their enlistment contracts expired or past due their approved retirement date. These veterans are entitled to a retroactive special payment of $500.00 for each extra month they served. The “STOP-LOSS” payments are intended to thank these veterans for their mandated extra service. The catch is that to receive this “STOP-LOSS” payment the veteran must apply for it before the cutoff date of October 21, 2010.
Information for filing “STOP-LOSS” retroactive claims can be found at these web sites or by e-mailing to these:

"Soldiers! Let us humble ourselves before the Lord, our God, asking through Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, beseeching the aid of the God of our forefathers in the defense of our homes and our
liberties, thanking Him for His past blessings, and imploring their continuance upon our cause and our people.""Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray - to really pray."
"Let there be prayer at sunup, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight--all through the day. Let us pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for the churches."
"Let us pray for ourselves, that we not lose the word 'concern' out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our nation. Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ and His redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice."

AMERICANISM

MEMBERS WANTED!
“May we never forget. Freedom is not a right but a privilege which must be constantly earned and protected.” VADM William P. Lawrence, USN Retired; POW Vietnam, 1967 - 1973.
Our Flag Retirement Ceremony on 15 May was a tremendous success. We had over 125 participants including Cub Scouts, Pack 36, Young Marines, active duty USMC, members of the Navy Performing Arts group, and members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. I am especially proud of all our Post Comrades and Sisters who participated in this semi-annual event. We retired 225 flags.
Check your garage or shed and see what spare building materials you have lying around. We could use some 2X4s, plywood, lighting fixtures, or general electrical supplies. This type of donation is a win/win situation for you and the Post. You will get a donation receipt for a tax write-off and you will help the Post defer the costs of buying these materials we could put to use. Please coordinate your donations with a Trustee or Post Officer as we do not have a great deal of storage space. We can pick it up if you can’t deliver your donated items.
MEMBERS WANTED: No experience necessary. We will train. One
qualifier for membership is having drawn Imminent Danger Pay. If you or someone
you know has drawn Imminent Danger Pay, sign them up for membership.
